Geophysicist (Workshop Supervisor)

Jonathan Lester

Jon graduated with a BA in Archaeology from Durham University, followed by an MSc in Palaeoanthropology and Palaeolithic Archaeology from the Institute of Archaeology at University College London. Jon’s primary archaeological interests lie in the study of Neanderthals, cave use along with new dating sequences, ancient mining, and Roman frontiers.

His career spans both the commercial and academic sectors within the UK, where he has developed advanced 3D scanning technology for subterranean research and innovative cave conservation techniques, working closely with the British Caving Association (BCA) and the British Cave Research Association (BCRA).

In addition to his research, Jon teaches palaeoarchaeology, photogrammetry, and archaeological techniques. His work takes him to Morocco, Austria, and the USA, where he conducts archaeological and speleological research.

Outside of work, Jon is passionate about caving, climbing, kayaking, and maintaining his Land Rover.
